Lisa,

I am a Qualcomm shareholder.

The iPad makes the Smartbooks and Kindle look like they're from the 1980’s

If smartbooks want to compete with Steve Jobs’ inventiveness, they’ll have to step up to be a must-have device in consumers’ digital lives. Of course, they can also just surrender and continue to sell chips to Apple and deploy apps (FloTv) to Apple which should be compatible with the iPad like all the other apps in the App Store.

Suggestions:

1.) Dr. Jacobs and Flo TV CEO, Bill Stone should bring Flo TV to the smartbooks.

2.) Fire Luis Pineda(yes, a nice guy, but nice doesn't trump incompetence) and fire all responsible for these hideous smartbook vids --

3.) Hire a polished PR Ad agency like Edelman Agency that knows social media

4.) Bring HD Video Calling and 5+ mega-pixel camera capablities to smartbooks

5.) Build an Smartbook App Shop like the Intel AppUP Center for Netbooks -- build it and they(the developers) will create smartbook apps

Said ways will help differentiate and/or align smartbooks with the iPad and prevent the smartbooks from becoming either a laughingstock or irrevelant at CES 2011.

the world is a big place, william. there are hundreds of millions of potential customers ready to spend billions of dollars, and they all have different opinions about what they want. why do you assume that apple will rule them all? apple's success doesn't have to come at the expense and abject failure of every other company who enters a market.

Obviously a huge advantage. Make no mistake, I think admiring superior ergonomic design, and a bigger software base, is important. I think, for example, that realizing where iPhone is vs. Droid, Pre, Nexus One, etc. is important. But a good reviewer should say, "Google did this wrong, Apple did this wrong, etc." Many followers of Apple find it impossible to admit when the great company does wrong - and that's how you recognize a cultist. No company, no individual, no social or political movement should be placed on a pedestal and worshiped without warts. A useful fan acknowledges the hero, warts and all.

Loring,

Apple has 34 Billion in cash in the bank

http://www.techcrunch.com/2009/10/20/apples-sauce-34-billion-in-cash-stock-peaks-and-mysterious-shipping-anomalies/

284 retail stores
3 Billion downloads
over 100,000 apps

Apple is bigger than Qualcomm, Dell, HP, Acer, and Freescale combined.

Apple is the most successful & innovative company on the planet...

Which technology company has earned and demonstrated more success?

Spoken like a true Apple cultist. I think some of these aspects might hold true for the Freescale or Marvell prototype tablets, but not for iPad at current price and feature set. More than $800 for a 3G version. How sad.

RIP

Smartbooks

Born: Summer 2009 - Died: 1/27/2010

Smartbooks, we hardly knew thee.

No Apps. No Video Calling. No TV.

Your appearance at CES was bad.

Now Jobs gave birth to his iPad.

And the smartbook collective grew sad.

Qualcomm, FreeScale, Acer, HP -- no match against Apple.

The Apple genius. The Apple tenacity. The Apple vision.

iPad - the birth of a new era of mobility
