This time of year, it’s common for anyone with an outlet to publish lists; lists of predictions, look-back lists, best and worst lists, and so on.

I’m certainly not above it, so here is mine; a list of things I wish existed in the world of consumer technology, in no particular order. What tops your tech wish list?

1) Better battery life, for all electronics and computers. Why can’t battery makers keep up with significant advancements made by other electronics companies and make a battery that lasts? I just don’t get it.

2) Universal chargers, faster! Seventeen handset makers in early 2009 committed to finally adopting a universal cell phone charger, by 2012. In my book, that’s too long to wait. I certainly hope they don’t take any longer to get it done. Every handset maker needs to adopt the standard. Every one. That means you, Apple.

3) Memory stick readers in every device. I’d love to be able to plug a standard memory stick into, say, my television to view photos and videos.

4) A color Kindle. Black and white screens in 2009 just seems wrong.

5) The end of exclusive deals between handset makers and wireless carriers. I should be able to buy a phone (or, soon, a smartbook) with the features I want without being tied to a specific carrier.

6) An end to Microsoft Office hegemony. The vast majority of people only use a small fraction of the features in Office applications, yet the suite hangs on as the (pricey) standard for creating business documents. Irksome incompatibilities make switching to an alternative more difficult.
